Do you support revising TDSB Policy P042 (Appropriate Dress) so that it aligns with equity and human rights, and so that it incorporates greater opportunity for student voice in dress code development, review, and revision?
I absolutely support an end to dress codes, and a revision of Policy P042. I am grateful to the student activists leading this initiative. I do not support any policy that enables gender policing or racial discrimination- and would like to note that dress codes also impact nuerodiverse and disabled students who may feel comfortable or uncomfortable in certain items of clothing . I recall a friend’s daughter (with a neurodiversity) wanting to wear a hat in class as it gave her great comfort and her teacher refused her. It caused the student greater anxiety and increased her already stressful experience of being in the classroom. This is an unnecessary and potentially harmful barrier to full participation in the classroom.
